OKPS a new creative industries and community precinct in Kyneton
The Victorian government is transforming the Old Kyneton Primary School into a vibrant mixed-use creative and community precinct. With a $12 million allocated in the 2020-21 state budget, the initiative focuses on revitalising the 1860s bluestone school building. This includes the creation of a new gallery/exhibition space and comprehensive safety and accessibility enhancements to both the building and grounds. Managed as a Cultural Infrastructure project by Creative Victoria and executed by Development Victoria, the project incorporates valuable input from Working Heritage. Sited on Taungurung Country, the project will celebrate both European and Indigenous heritage and provide opportunity for Traditional Owner involvement in the future of the new precinct. The project reached a milestone with the development of a Strategic Site Masterplan in 2021-22 by Winwood McKenzie. The architectural design and tender documents, led by the team at Fieldwork, set the stage for the current restoration work undertaken by McCorkell Constructions.
The focus is on breathing new life into the historic 1860s building, creating versatile spaces for the gallery, exhibition areas, a new food and beverage offering, and an accessible entrance. A modern link building is also in progress to serve as the main entry and a versatile function space. Environmental sustainability is at the forefront of the project, with the planting of over 5000 local native plants, including the addition of 12 new trees. Existing trees will be preserved unless considered unsafe, ensuring a harmonious blend of heritage and innovation in this transformative endeavour.
